<p style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://www.bbg.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brooklyn Botanic Garden</a> (BBG) offers something for everyone; Brush up on the history of Plantae at the <a href="http://www.bbg.org/collections/gardens/plant_family_collection" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Plant Family Collection</a>. (Handy fact: ferns were the first plant to appear on earth). Try and list all 80 plants named in the Bard&#8217;s plays over at the <a href="http://www.bbg.org/collections/gardens/shakespeare_garden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shakespeare Garden</a>. <a href="http://www.bbg.org/collections/gardens/japanese_garden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Japanese Hill and Pond Garden</a>, one of the most visited Japanese-inspired gardens outside of Japan, is a must-see during spring&#8217;s cherry blossom season. Don&#8217; miss the viewing pavilion and Shinto shrine.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">While flowers come and go with the seasons, art is constant. The BBG has invited Canadian sculptor <a href="http://www.shaynedark.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shayne Dark</a> to bring his works to the BBG as part of a year-long exhibition that ends July, 2017.</p>
<p><a href="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0754.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-4454 aligncenter" alt="IMG_0754" src="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0754.jpg?resize=481%2C360&#038;ssl=1" width="481" height="360" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0754.jpg?resize=481%2C360&amp;ssl=1 481w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0754.jpg?resize=500%2C375&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0754.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0754.jpg?resize=580%2C435&amp;ssl=1 580w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0754.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0754.jpg?resize=487%2C365&amp;ssl=1 487w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0754.jpg?resize=610%2C457&amp;ssl=1 610w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0754.jpg?w=900&amp;ssl=1 900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I caught up with Shayne this summer. (Shayne is pictured above with <em>Tanglewood Blue</em>) He told me that his installations &#8211; often made from different types of wood from cedar branches to apple gnarls &#8211; are influenced by his childhood growing up near the Ottawa river in Ontario where he played a lot with sticks and wood. Logs from a nearby paper and pulp factory  would float downstream and get tangled in bends.</p>
<blockquote><p>As a child I was fascinated to see that, running across the logs and pushing them away and trying to get them back into the flow of the river&#8230; I like using ephemeral materials. I&#8217;m ok with these works going back to nature. Art doesn&#8217;t have to last for durations of time. It has to be in the moment.</p></blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Shayne applies matt theatre paint to his pieces. He discovered the flat paint while working in set design at NYC&#8217;s Ed Sullivan Theatre (now David Letterman) twenty-five years ago.</p>
<p><a href="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/DSC00080.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-4459 aligncenter" alt="DSC00080" src="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/DSC00080.jpg?resize=331%2C481&#038;ssl=1" width="331" height="481" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/DSC00080.jpg?resize=331%2C481&amp;ssl=1 331w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/DSC00080.jpg?resize=500%2C726&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/DSC00080.jpg?resize=768%2C1115&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/DSC00080.jpg?resize=399%2C580&amp;ssl=1 399w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/DSC00080.jpg?resize=600%2C871&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/DSC00080.jpg?resize=487%2C707&amp;ssl=1 487w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/DSC00080.jpg?resize=344%2C500&amp;ssl=1 344w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/DSC00080.jpg?w=900&amp;ssl=1 900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The paint is so flat, Shayne explained, so that the light doesn&#8217;t bounce into the audience&#8217;s eyes and distract them from the performance.  (Shayne pictured above with <em>Tanglewood Red</em>) He likes working with primary colours.</p>
<blockquote><p>Primary colours are so immediate as compared to secondary colours. You see something red and it emotes a feeling. I like to bring beauty into my work.</p></blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Make a day of your Brooklyn outing and visit the <a href="https://www.brooklynmuseum.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brooklyn Museum</a> next door. Housed in a pretty Beaux Arts landmark building, the museum is known for its top temporary exhibitions. I popped in and saw &#8220;Disguise&#8221;,  an eye-catching show by 25 artists from Africa and beyond who used the history of African masks to address twenty-first-century  issues.</p>
<p><a href="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0764.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-4455 aligncenter" alt="IMG_0764" src="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0764.jpg?resize=310%2C481&#038;ssl=1" width="310" height="481" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0764.jpg?resize=310%2C481&amp;ssl=1 310w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0764.jpg?resize=500%2C776&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0764.jpg?resize=768%2C1191&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0764.jpg?resize=373%2C580&amp;ssl=1 373w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0764.jpg?resize=600%2C930&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0764.jpg?resize=487%2C755&amp;ssl=1 487w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0764.jpg?resize=322%2C500&amp;ssl=1 322w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_0764.jpg?w=900&amp;ssl=1 900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px" /></a></p>

But what would be the 4th largest city in America is now so cool that I decided the time had come to cross that bridge. One neighbourhood, Flatbush, has just been voted  the 7th out of 15 <a href="http://www.vogue.com/slideshow/1080625/fifteen-coolest-street-style-neighborhoods/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">coolest neighbourhoods </a>in the <strong>world</strong> by Vogue Magazine. Forte Greene is also hot, as is griffitti-clad Bushwick and artist studio-filled Red Hook. Time Out magazine just published its <a href="http://www.timeout.com/newyork/things-to-do/the-10-coolest-nyc-walking-tours" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Top Ten </a>walking tours in New York and half of them are in Brooklyn.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Oh my goodness! Where to begin?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I immediately called my friend Natalie who, like me, seriously struggles with Fear Of Missing Out and, unlike me, is an ace researcher/organiser. Natalie decided gastro-hub Williamsburg was a good starter for us newbies. So we packed our passports descended the subway at 59th and Lex and off to Brooklyn we went. Here&#8217;s Natalie a few hours post-subway, looking a bit smug  at how well her planning has gone. She&#8217;s seated at the counter in the uber-cool <a href="http://reynardnyc.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reynard restaurant</a> at the <a href="http://wythehotel.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wythe Hotel</a> in Williamsburg.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">But I&#8217;m jumping. More on Wythe later. Destination 1: <a href="http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/home.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brooklyn Museum</a> near Park Slope. There we saw a fun show called &#8220;Killer Heels&#8221;. Don&#8217;t miss the somewhat raunchy videos- heels never looked so sexy.</p>
<p><a href="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/20141026_063939.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-1678 aligncenter" alt="20141026_063939" src="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/20141026_063939-481x397.jpg?resize=481%2C397&#038;ssl=1" width="481" height="397" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/20141026_063939.jpg?resize=481%2C397&amp;ssl=1 481w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/20141026_063939.jpg?resize=500%2C413&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/20141026_063939.jpg?resize=768%2C635&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/20141026_063939.jpg?resize=580%2C479&amp;ssl=1 580w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/20141026_063939.jpg?resize=487%2C402&amp;ssl=1 487w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/20141026_063939.jpg?resize=604%2C500&amp;ssl=1 604w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/20141026_063939.jpg?w=900&amp;ssl=1 900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I strongly recommend hailing  a cab from outside the museum to Williamsburg going via Bedford Stuyvesant&#8217;s Hasidic neighbourhood that seems otherworldly and at odds with happening Brooklyn. In Williamsburg we wandered on and around Grand Street taking in the cool buildings.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">And the cool people where vintage hats, thigh-high boots, colourful sandals and hot pants are in, in, in.</p>
<p><a href="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5094.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-1709 aligncenter" alt="IMG_5094" src="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5094-251x481.jpg?resize=251%2C481&#038;ssl=1" width="251" height="481" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5094.jpg?resize=251%2C481&amp;ssl=1 251w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5094.jpg?resize=302%2C580&amp;ssl=1 302w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5094.jpg?resize=261%2C500&amp;ssl=1 261w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5094.jpg?w=470&amp;ssl=1 470w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">We lunched at the Wythe, once a factory now a buzzy hangout. The line for the Ides Bar stretched around the block, but for the Reynard restaurant we just walked straight in.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Next on Natalie&#8217;s list was foodie central <a href="http://www.smorgasburg.com/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Smorgasburg</a>, the &#8216;Brooklyn Flea Food Market&#8217; where the hipsters descend every weekend until November 22nd/23rd and stuff their faces from a slew of tempting stalls.</p>
<p><a href="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5092.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-1687 aligncenter" alt="IMG_5092" src="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5092-481x360.jpg?resize=481%2C360&#038;ssl=1" width="481" height="360" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5092.jpg?resize=481%2C360&amp;ssl=1 481w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5092.jpg?resize=500%2C375&amp;ssl=1 500w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5092.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5092.jpg?resize=580%2C435&amp;ssl=1 580w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5092.jpg?resize=487%2C365&amp;ssl=1 487w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5092.jpg?resize=610%2C457&amp;ssl=1 610w, https://i0.wp.com/elenabowes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/IMG_5092.jpg?w=900&amp;ssl=1 900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It&#8217;s a big party where every hunger/thirst pang can be satisfied. Fancy some Ethiopian tea? Or perhaps a glass of  Vermont Maple Lemonade? Oaxaca Tacos, Burma Noodle Bar, Biteme Cheesecake, Jack&#8217;s Chedbread and Elvio&#8217;s Chimichurri, it&#8217;s all here. Long lines are always a helpful clue to what&#8217;s worth eating. The lines were impressive at this pork joint.</p>

<p>And this sweet spot&#8230;</p>
