My boyfriend and I visited St Tropez over Easter, and it was a delight. I recommend going from April through to October. While St Tropez is swimming in flash and flair during July and August, visitors can enjoy a much more laid-back, local scene in the off-season. This Bridget Bardot-inspired, quintessentially French jewel on the Med has a villagy feel that gets lost in the summer season of super yachts and super models. In the spring the streets aren’t too crowded, and the shops are full of tempting summer finds. We began every morning with breakfast at Mission Control, Le Senequier, where everyone congregates to catch up with friends and do a bit of people and boat gazing.

Club 55 on the beach is still going strong, even during Easter, and worth every euro for atmosphere and a delicious lunch.

We finished off our huge meal (the grilled loup is terrific) with seasonal fraises du bois, signalling hot summer is really just around the corner.

And for those who like to swim, the pool at Chateau de la Messardiere up in the hills is hard to beat. There’s a heated, indoor one for cooler days.

There’s no prettier place for a sunset drink than by the sea at Residence de la Pinede.
