Art as Therapy

I love the idea of this show, “Art as Therapy” at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. Guest curators Alain de Botton and John Armstrong have created new, more meaningful captions for 150 works from the museum’s permanent display. The new captions deal with what the works can actually do for the viewer by touching on  profound issues like love, status, work, and difficult relationships.

It opens April 25th, 2014 and closes September 7th. And for those visiting the Dutch museum this summer, venture outside and see the Alexander Calder show. The late American sculptor’s immense sculptures and mobiles will be on display in the museum’s new ”Outdoor Gallery”.

And for those of you who can’t make it to Amsterdam this summer, Alain de Botton’s School of Life enterprise sells Mood Books in which illustrations of carefully selected artworks have been chosen to depict certain moods.  In the “Daring” notebook, for example, a painting of the first balloon crossing of the English Channel is spread over the inside cover pages.
